Understanding children from the inside out
A calm, neurodiversity-affirming space exploring how the brain and body shape children’s experiences, and how we can support their wellbeing.
We teach children about taking care of their bodies... but not always their inner world
Children are taught how to look after their bodies from a really young age - the importance of exercise, how to brush their teeth, wash their hands, eat well, and get enough sleep.
But their inner world isn’t always given the same attention.
We don’t always show them how their brain and body work together, or how to understand what they’re feeling, sensing, and experiencing from the inside.
And yet, this is shaping their experience of the world every day.
The Sensory Space is a place where children and the adults around them can begin to understand these inner experiences - how the brain, body and emotions connect, and what that means in everyday life.
Not just when things feel hard, but so children grow up with the awareness and tools to understand themselves, care for their mental wellbeing, and move through those harder moments when they come.
What you'll find in this space...
The Sensory Space brings together different parts of a child’s inner world - from the brain and body to emotions, communication, regulation and connection. Each one offers a way of understanding what might be happening beneath the surface, and how we can support children in ways that feel calm, connected and in tune with their needs.
Brain & Body
Understanding how the brain and body work together - from sensory processing and the nervous system to movement, regulation and physical responses.

Emotions
Understanding how emotions work — how they are felt in the body, expressed, and responded to in everyday life.
Regulation
Understanding how the nervous system regulates - and what supports the body to settle, recover and feel more able to cope.

CommunicationÂ
Supporting communication - in all the ways children express themselves, and how that is recognised and responded to.

Connection
Understanding relationships, safety and attachment - and how connection is formed and experienced over time.
Hi, I’m Josie
I’m a neurodivergent adult, teacher and SENDCo, with over a decade of experience supporting children in early years and primary school settings.
Through both my work and lived experience, I’ve seen how much there is to understand about children’s inner worlds - especially when so much of what shapes their experience isn’t immediately visible.
This space is for the adults who want to understand children more deeply, and for the children themselves - helping them build the awareness, language and tools to understand their minds and bodies, support their wellbeing, and navigate times when things feel harder.
The Sensory Space was created as a place to explore and understand these experiences more deeply. This space is about bringing together the brain, body, emotions and communication in a way that feels calm, accessible and genuinely helpful.

Everything is connected
The way a child feels in their body, their emotions, their communication, their sense of connection…
It’s all part of the same system.
When we understand more about how these pieces fit together, it becomes easier to support children in ways that feel calm, connected and in tune with what they need.
This space is growing into a collection of gentle, neuro-affirming resources - designed to help children understand themselves, support their wellbeing, and navigate times when things feel harder.
You’re welcome to explore it in your own time.
